We’ve been the world’s largest casino for a couple years now, but did you know that in the beginning WinStar was just a tent located off I-35? highway? It’s hard to believe , but a little over 20 years ago we were located inside a temporary structure with a fabric roof, and we were originally a place where people could get their Bingo fix. Our name at the time was, “Touso Ishto Bingo”. Bingo, of course, was the only game offered at that time. We’ve also been lucky enough to have employees with us for that long! In fact, one employee is now the Bingo Manager. It is our pleasure to introduce Kathy Pelton.
Kathy came to us from Potawatomi Bingo located in Shawnee, Oklahoma where she started working in high school. When she moved south to attend the University of North Texas, she passed Touso Ishto on the way. As fate would have it, Touso Ishto was hiring. Given her prior bingo experience, she was a perfect fit and was hired on the spot. Little did Kathy know that stopping by on that August day in 1991 would lead to more than two decades at WinStar. “I’ve had the opportunity to do so many things—it’s unbelievable. There is honestly a place for everyone,” said Kathy.
So, what’s a typical day like for the Bingo Manager in the world’s largest casino? In one word: busy. “It’s difficult to plan out a day in advance because not one day is ever the same,” Kathy said. Most of her work is done at her computer, creating spreadsheets and reviewing reports. She answers guests’ calls and emails about Bingo. She also brainstorms new ideas for promotions and writes rules for promotions. A very important aspect of her job is meeting with patrons to hear their thoughts, ideas and concerns. She may be very busy, but she always has time for guests.
Other WinStar employees say Kathy is an excellent manager not only because of her extensive bingo experience, but they said her compassion puts her in a league of her own. She enjoys watching WinStar guests smile with excitement as they are paid out a jackpot or watching an employee as they are rewarded for their hard work and dedication.
We’ve long since outgrown the small bingo tent, but we haven’t outgrown our love for the game and neither has Kathy. Our current Bingo Room comfortably seats 937 people. We host sessions every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and occasionally on holidays. For more information about sessions or about current bingo promotions, visit our website here.
We would like to thank Kathy for taking the time to sit down and chat with us. We’re fortunate to have someone with her dedication and experience leading the Bingo teams!
